Over the years I have had this amazing opportunity to witness the evolution of adaptive snowboarding and the prosthetic devices used for shredding. Much of this equipment was designed for other purposes and has been modified or tweaked for the alternate purpose of ripping down the mountain. This innovation and capacity to adapt is not unique to adaptive snowboarders, it is a quality that has always existed in snowboarding. When my childhood heroes like Damian Sanders and Chris Roach were hucking their meat off 50 footers and bonin’ out sweet Methods, I witnessed creativity. It is this same spirit that is embedded in the hearts of adaptive shedders. Have you ever seen a man who lost his leg above the knee due to an I.E.D. three months prior, go onto throw a Switch 540? I have.
Please check out the following leg assembly profiles. These individuals have some great prosthetic devices that they use for snowboarding and that could work for you as well. Each section has corresponding photographs that go along with the text. Please read all of the profiles to see what equipment is working, as there are many different products/designs that can work for snowboarding. These profiles are not an endorsement of the prosthetic devices, it is just an acknowledgment of what is currently being use to snowboard. I highly recommend that you do not attempt to use any of this equipment without the endorsement of a certified prosthetist and that you seek professional snowboard instruction from a certified snowboard instructor. If you are an individual seeking to use this information to help yourself, or a friend, then please send me an email that states that you want to use the material and keep me posted on the progress. I would like to thank Aaron Schultz for his documentary and photographic work on this expansion of the Leg Assembly section of my site. Also the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) for helping out with his travel expenses. Let’s not forget Marc Moss, the raddest web designer in the known universe. And of course, the adaptive riders in these profiles. Their donation to the adaptive community, and more importantly, to future adaptive shredhounds is priceless. Thank you!!!
Remember, if you don’t rip it, then you can’t grip it!
Sincerely,
Lucas Grossi
